The two most popular are full wood mantel surrounds and mantel shelves.  A wood mantel surround encases three sides of the fireplace. The village mantel in our scenery carvings gallery is an example of an elaborate carved wood mantel surround. A wood mantel shelf consists of a carved wood panel topped with crown moulding with carved returns (the short edges which run from the mitred corners to the back wall on which the shelf is attached).  Sometimes, wood mantel shelves rest on corbels; decorative supports jutting out of the wall below the shelf on either side of the fireplace.
