Last week, Scott and I went to a party at a cozy mountain home in the Sundance ski resort community. While there, we met Kelley and Eric Somer. We discovered that the Somers live about a half mile away from us in Alpine, Utah. We enjoyed laughing with them as we swapped stories about home remodeling nightmares.
Kelley Somer is a talented artist who creates gorgeous richly textured paintings. “My work is all about the importance of people connecting over meals,” Somer said. “I love to cook and entertain. I hope that other people who have my art can experience that time, even if they’re not entertaining at the moment.”
I found it very entertaining to look at Kelley’s work on her website. It is not surprising that Kelley is selling her paintings as quickly as she can finish them. We wish her continued success.
Lou Quallenberg was one of the fellow artist/exhibitors at the Western Design Conference. Lou creates amazing mesquite furniture. Actually, the word “furniture” does not do his beautiful wood art justice. You can see pictures of his wood sculptures on his website: www.louqart.com. Last Friday night, Scott and I attended an awards banquet for Utah artists and musicians. Scott was a finalist in the sculpture category. We were honored to be recognized along with painter James Christensen and the legendary Arnold Friberg who won a Lifetime Achievement award.
The event was a kick-off for the Salt Lake Broadway organization, in partnership with Community Alliance. The Salt Lake Broadway organization has a three-fold mission.
Lone Peak Carvings will be at Cowboy Christmas in December with new western arts inspired furniture and gifts. Cowboy Christmas is the longest-running gift and art show held in conjunction with the WNFR in Las Vegas. The 2009 show runs from Dec. 3 – Dec 12.
Over 400 western artists show their western collections which include jewelry, western sculptures, western paintings and prints, western wear and official NFR and PRCA merchandise. It is like a new traveling western art museum every year!
If you are attending the National Finals Rodeo or another Vegas event this December, come see us at Cowboy Christmas at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Scott completed the first phase of an extensive job for the Wort Hotel in Jackson, WY. The Wort Hotel is an historic luxury hotel in downtown Jackson. The hotel is full of original Western art- paintings, sculptures, etc. We carved doors for ten themed suites such as “The Cowgirl Suite” and the “Silver Dollar Suite”. If you are in Jackson, stop by The Wort, go upstairs and see the incredibly detailed carvings. (Fortunately, the carvings are on the outside of the suites, so you can see them even if you are not staying at the hotel!)
Scott, our son Chase, and I just returned from the Western Design Conference in Jackson, WY. We always enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new western artists. The caliber of art never ceases to amaze and inspire us.
Resort home and ranch property owners from all over the country talked to us about commissioning custom wood carvings for their elegant homes. Scott is now busy creating new designs to complement mountain properties, new lake homes and even a few ocean homes.
